A magnificent antique Victorian oak chair by F Danbys of Leeds dating from circa 1870. With sling back in beautifully figured oak frame with scratch carved detailing and standing on pumpkin legs, turned and carved and terminating in original brass and ceramic casters. Solid and sturdy and recently recovered would make a wonderful desk chair or bedroom chair. With paper label underneath: “From F Danbys Upholstery and Cabinet Works LEEDS No 71306”
F Danby’s was a 19th century cabinet makers and upholsters run by Francis Danby in the Upper Headrow of Leeds, West Yorkshire. The company carried out work for the Council Chambers in Leeds having made the seats and fittings for the local council building. According the 1871 census, F Danbys was recorded as employing 14 men and 2 boys.

Good condition, solid and sturdy with beautiful colour and patina to the oak frame. Recently recovered, upholstery good. An old mended partial split in the oak to the inside of the back leg which is solid. General wear and marks commensurate with age.
