A very stylish Art Deco Canadian Cedar Wood lined walnut chest by the Chesley Chair Company dating from circa 1940s. In beautifully figured walnut veneers, the curved top lifts on a metal arm to reveal a cedar wood lined interior with an interior shelf. It has a push release button lock to the lid and the inside has a makers label. Below is a single drawer and it stands on a curved plinth base. Very well made, quality chest in good condition the clean cedar lined interior and drawer below offering lots of useful storage as a bedroom chest or it could even be used as a TV stand.
Founded in Canada in 1909, The Chesley Chair Company first produced “The Heirloom Cedar Chest” in 1924. It came with their “Moth Insurance Policy”; the aromatic cedar wood lining was designed to safeguard your personal treasures, blankets and woollens from moths. It became so popular that for many years, over half of the factory capacity was devoted to its manufacture. It was discontinued in 1965.
