Product Description
A stylish Art Deco steamer Trunk or Cabin Wardrobe by Dale of New York and dating from circa 1930s. Monogrammed “C.H” and with interesting labels for Kobe, Japan the “NYK Line” and for the MS Asama Maru. It includes its original key and wood hangers and interior compartments. The canvas trunk features bound studded edges, and metal corner brackets, with a clasp that lifts-up and opens the trunk to reveal a fully fitted interior with 3 drawers on one side and a wardrobe section with the original hangers and dust cover on the other. A great display piece in a retail environment or a useful piece of furniture for the home as a storage chest or coffee table.
The Asama Maru was built for NYK’s premier high-speed trans-Pacific Orient-California fortnightly service, coming into operation from autumn of 1929. The trip from Yokohama to San Francisco typically took 15 days, with fares starting from $190 in second class and from $315 in first class. By 1941 it was being used for military purposes and eventually in 1944 it was torpedoed and sunk by USS Atule in the South China Sea. A nice piece of history attached to this trunk and a handy way to date this luggage!
