A fine quality and attractive small antique late Victorian rosewood inlaid open armchair by Hewetson, Milner and Thexton Ltd of Tottenham Court Road London and dating from circa 1900. The back splat with marquetry inlay of an urn and swag, the rail back and arched top rail with stringing. With curved arms and standing on tapering legs terminating in spade feet. The upholstered seat in good condition – a few small marks to fabric). With brass label underneath reading: “Hewetson, Milner and Thexton Limited House Furnishers 200,203,204,211,212,213,214,215 Tottenham Ct Road London .W”.
Formed on July 26, 1887, Hewetson, Milner and Thexton Ltd were prestigious 19th Century furniture makers based in Tottenham Court Road London. By 1900 the company occupied nos 1-15 Tottenham Court Road. The company resisted the estate’s attempts to extend Alfred Place through their property (The Times, 20 December 1900) but eventually were forced to move to premises to 209–212 Tottenham Court Road at a much increased increased rent, going bankrupt shortly afterwards in 1901.
