At Antique Furniture Direct we stock a wide range of antique chairs for sale. We seek out pieces that are of high quality, well carved, and unusual. We sell antique carver or armchairs which make very stylish desk chairs as well as a range of decorative side chairs and bedroom chairs such as antique balloon back chairs. We often also stock sets of 4,6 and sometimes 8 antique dining chairs as well as harlequin sets.
In terms of date, our stock usually starts with Regency bar backs, often quite plain but the beauty of the wood and the simplicity of design as well as often being of a smaller size than later Victorian copies make them very desirable. The early Victorian examples we sell frequently have drop or slip in seats and bobbin turned legs with the typical balloon or bar back. The archetypal mid to late Victorian salon chairs with balloon backs on cabriole legs are perennially popular. Also popular from this period are Victorian revivals of Hepplewhite and Sheraton styles, now collectable in their own right with their carved splats and delicate sabre legs. Late Victorian Gothic chairs are a popular choice for halls and as feature chairs or end chairs for dining tables. The Arts and Crafts movement and the Art Nouveau period chairs are always sought after, good examples of these being rarer and highly sought after. We also occasionally stock open armchairs from the Regency period to the late Victorian, which make excellent home desk chairs, being both comfortable and stylish, as well as low nursing chairs.
