Product Description
A very stylish Art Deco Canadian Cedar Wood lined walnut chest by the Honderich Furniture Company dating from circa 1940s. In beautifully figured walnut veneers, the curved top lifts to reveal a cedar wood lined interior with an interior shelf which raises on a copper concertina hinge. It has a push release button lock to the lid and the inside is stamped with its makers mark. Very well made, quality chest in good condition offering lots of useful storage.
The Honderich Furniture Company made these chests in Canada from the early to mid 20th century and they came with their Red Seal “Moth Insurance” guarantee; the aromatic cedar wood lining was designed to safeguard your personal treasures, blankets and woollens from moths. Christian R. Honderich and August Eidt founded the H.E. Furniture Company in Milverton, Ontario in 1911. In 1917, they began to manufacture cedar chests. They also made desks, book cases, coffee tables, and dining room suites. The company officially became the Honderich Furniture Company in 1926. It was sold to Messrs. Dow and Kirkham in 1967, who in turn sold it to Electrohome in 1969.
